After a record-breaking race in 2016, registration is now live at drumstickdash.net for the 2017 Union Drumstick DASH. This year’s event will be the 12th annual Thanksgiving Day 5K through downtown Roanoke. The race is the Rescue Mission’s largest fundraiser, inviting participants to “Move Your Feet So Others Can Eat.” It has attracted as many as 15,000 runners and walkers and become a treasured Thanksgiving Day tradition for families.
Last year’s DASH racked up several awards and smashed fundraising records, bringing in more than $265,000. It was recently voted by readers of The Roanoker Magazine to receive the top Platinum Award as the “Can’t Miss Local Charity Event.” Virginia Living Magazine readers voted Drumstick DASH the “Best Regional Charity Event” in Southwest Virginia.
“We are so blessed that the Drumstick DASH is so well-loved in our community,” says Race Director Uneita Mathews. “The Rescue Mission served more than 225,000 meals to hungry families and individuals last year, and the DASH helps make that possible.”
2017 participants are urged to take advantage of the special Early Bird discount before registration fees increase after September 15.
In a related event, the Rescue Mission is hosting its’ annual DASH Turkey Drawing Contest this weekend at the Taubman Museum of Art’s Sidewalk Art Show. Young artists are encouraged to visit the museum’s atrium this Saturday and Sunday and draw their most creative turkey—the winner will adorn the coveted DASH t-shirt.
